Jan. 1, Sat.

All had dinner here. Betty made coconut tarts. We had roast chicken & all the fixins. Rays gathering up toms and bananas etc. Baked buns & pie for tomorrow. All at Cls [Claudon's] for cafeteria supper of spn bread. good. The year has started with a bang how will it end? in His peace.

Jan. 2, Sun.

Services as per usual. All ate dinner here. and birthday supper at Cls – birthday cake was all decorated with icing bees, spiders etc. Very pretty and unusual. Rays all packed & want to get off at 4. Sally is happy to stay. Got the letter written to Cora abt Guest Home. We didn't like hers – so sent her one by us (Gl. mostly).

Jan. 3, Mon.

Rays [Raymond & family] got away a bit before 4 so should have had plenty of time for shopping. Cls all ate dinner here & we ate supper there. Wrote some letters – Put Christmas papers & decorations away am so dizzy as I move around – my tummy is not comfy -

Jan. 4, Tues.

Dr. came & can find nothing to cause the dizziness except my stomach. Gave me medicine. Spees came ab't 4. We had tea for Dr. too. Mrs Deans complains of dizziness too – got a nice mail but was jipped on my stamps – sent .10 in stead of 1.00.

Jan. 5, Wed.

Feel better tonight – not so dizzy. Wrote some – mended some – Ella busy writing. Bill put together a card board plane & they flew it a lot. Wonderful for the children. No swimming too cold.

Jan. 6, Thur.

Ella gave Gl. a permanent. I mended some – wrote some & knitted quite a bit. Will we be at Rethy one wk from tonight? Feel so much better.

Jan. 7, Fri.

Picked strawberries, Sara brot me honey this year – a nice lot. Wrote some – helped MA with rug which she wants to give to her mother – nice rain this P.M. Got 4 eggs from 9 hens.

Jan. 8, Sat.

Usual work. Ate in park mac. & tuna. mixed salad – root beer & soda & cake. with peanuts & raisins. Cl. ran the phono & all enjoyed it.

Jan. 9, Sun.

Communion service & a full church. Ab't 2 P.M. Bill [Spees] decided to take Alan to Dr. as he has bad tooth ache. All had supper at Gls. very nice. Reading F. B. Myers “Elijah” - so good in eve service.

Jan. 10, Mon.

Just a lot of work and nothing to show for it. Sally Jo has a go of fever has been on my bed all day. Ella has prescribed for her & she seems cooler this eve – so has gone to bed. I keep at the sweater.

Jan. 11, Tues.

Baked do nuts & ate them most all. Baked date cookies. Killed a small pig. Gl. is so busy – has so much marking to do. [sewing name tags on kids clothes for boarding school?] Bill's parcels came today. Such lovely things – Me a lovely small scissors. Sally staid in bed all day & is much better.

Jan. 12, Wed.

Sally ab't OK. Bill found yesterday that the 2nd bridge is broken so both cars went down & Cl. got his across & Bill will take the loads down in the morning. Very hot & sultry. Strawberries – made some jam for Deans.

Jan. 13, Thur. Rethy

Got away by 6 but took a while to load at the bridge. Stopt at Beni and at Oicha & Irumu only to post letters then Bunia. Got here ab't 6:30 – found all fine but Ray has a lame back. Grations have a baby girl. Everyone up this morn to see us off.

Jan. 14, Fri.

Ate dinner & break. here & supper in the dining room. 240 guests are expected. Finished MA's pull over. Met several new workers & all Rethy-ites. Got $10. for house from Car. Can. [Carbon Canyon?] S. S. Very grateful. Will write them at once.

Jan. 15, Sat.

Guess most all are here – there's a mob. Had word today that Reitsmas house & the hospital were set on fire & burned down. They have been at Oicha – all got here after dark. Helpt Sara bake 2 spice cakes – mended & did some knitting. Lincolns didn't get their pass-port so aren't coming.

Jan. 16, Sun.

In my jubilee year! Dr. Becker spoke well altho he used the notes as I gave them to him. I never thot he w'd. Testimony mtg – Schuit called on me to lead out. Evening new workers spoke well. 27 of them. Quite a few from West Nile. Clo busy in dining room. Eats good.

Jan. 17, Mon.

A day full of good things. Didn't get to the early pr mtg. Brashler & Kunz this A.M. P.M biz mtg. Ray was elected chairman much to his disgust. The skits were all very good. Ours Stanley applying to come out etc. etc. was good – also Sudan “lost his suit”, Rethy – Litchman & Vogel married – etc. Nice talk afterward by Epp.

Jan. 18, Tues.

Went to all mtgs beginning at 6. All very good. Ray spoke very “right from the shoulder” and so many have spoken how helpful it was. Spoke on “need of liberty”. Too selfish – jealous – etc. Mr. Glenn Wagner spoke tonight of his work in the Orient. So good. Ray has malaria.

Jan. 19, Wed.

All mtgs fine – especially P.T.L. Told of going to see Pres. Eisenhower. Didn't go to P.M. discussion “Gov't help or?” Picture “I beheld his glory” - Very good. Went to Arthur's [Barnett] for a little social time & to see the house & also the guests Kunz & Wagner.

Jan. 20, Thur.

Today we took “On Safari for God” & put them on the table to be taken as folks liked. They went in a hurry. Ken D. came this P.M. with the big trunk for Kunz & Wagner. Good talk by Mr. K – telling how P.T.L. got started. More pictures tonight. Animal & A. Paul & team.

Jan. 21, Fri.

Mtgs all day – with a big music prog. tonight. Some of the new workers have fine talents. Mrs. Stam sang her “daisy” song again just as nice as ever. Mary A. has fever & a sore throat. Didn't go to supper. Nice having Ken around tho don't see much of him.

Jan. 22, Sat.

Went to all A.M. mtgs. None this P.M. only base ball & Com. mtgs. and Council – Cl. gets so tired. Eric & Bill and Mr. Morrow and the young man from Switzerland came. He is a new worker. Goes to Bogoro.

Jan. 23, Sun.

What a day of good things. J. Buyse first, then Mr. Kunz so good & dedication of babies & communion. Then after supper Eric told something of Mau Mau & Ken & Mr. Morrow. F.D. of T.T. spoke & with special music it was 9 before mtg closed. Lights kept on til most 10. Many pictures were taken.

Jan. 24, Mon.

Some left at 6 – others after break. & some after dinner but we were still a big crowd for supper. We have sandwiches all made & hope to get off by 6. Pictures tonight which the children enjoyed.

Jan. 25, Tues.

HOME. Got here 6:30. Every one seems OK & we are glad to get back. Poor Dicky was broken hearted & clung to Gl. Hope he feels better. Shopt at Bunia posted things at Irumu, stopt at Oicha & Beni – car troubled some but roads are good so came fast.

Jan. 26, Wed.

Getting back into routine. Putting things into place. A letter on my desk from Ella says all was fine. Miss Vigeon from Nyankunde was here with them. They staid all night at the Lake to get animal movies. Stanley & Evelyn got here by 7. Betty had break here & all had dinner & supper here. Evelyn sleeps here – Stanley at Cls.

Jan. 27, Thur.

They left after breakfast – had a load of folks – a sick woman – and school boys & some tomatoes. We made juice & canned some. So many are ripe. Mail man came & brot very nice big mail. Small parcel from Lo of 2 batteries & 2 ball point pens. I'm using one for letters.

Jan. 28, Fri.

Ate dinner at Cls. Wrote some. Cleaned my lamp – wick was dirty. Boys worked til noon. Pickles soaking in salt water. Got some nice vegetables from Jacquemin. [local Belgian trader] Cl. has malaria is taking aralen.

Jan. 29, Sat.

Gl's cook is sick so they ate dinner here. Olsons and Carolyn and Dorothy Baker came ab't 5:30. We were ready for dessert so we sat at a small table & gave them our places. The girls are in stone house & Olsons in mine. Cl. is better today. All have bathed. Faithful Koronelio staid & brot bath water. Mrs Olson is enjoying the organ.

Jan. 30, Sun.

Had quite a shower over dinner. All ate here – chicken dinner – sandwich supper. I felt so groggy ab't 9 – thot I'd lie down a bit & went off to sleep & when I wakened all had gone to mtg. They were singing first hymn. Getting letters ready for Cl. to post at Irumu.

Jan. 31, Mon.

Paid boys – had it. Thank God. Cl & Betty got away by 9:30 so hope they are at Nyankundi this eve. We expected Lincolns but they haven't come – maybe at Oicha. Cl has the battery but there have been no mission broadcasts for a long time – atmosphere – supposes. Rained again at noon.

Feb. 1, Tues.

Lincolns came ab't 4:30. Cl. just after them and Austin Paul, Mr. Brill, Mr. Kung and Wagners some later. My 4 go to the Lake early & the other 4 later. Nice parcel from Co. Ella sent cinnamon etc. Mended & fixed several things.

Feb. 2, Wed.

My folks didn't get away til almost 5. They had a nice time. Twas raining pretty hard as they came up hill but they made it (with chains). The Paul car got away ab't 6:30. They stopt in the Park only to get a drink of coffee & then went. Picked berries & made jam. Lincolns brot a water melon. Wonder if Faithy has had a happy day.

Feb. 3, Thur.

Folks left ab't 9. They took one of the white kittens altho Mr. Olson had said “NO”. he didn't know it was in the car. The women's conf. is on. Such a lot of women here – church is full. Gl & Cl ate supper here & will have dinner & supper here til Mon.

Feb. 4, Fri.

Planted cabbage seed and transplanted flowers on veranda. Wrote Stacy a birthday letter. Trouble to get wash dry. & ironed – didn't rain but cloudy & sprinkled some. Mtgs still going on wih interest. Cl showed Pilgrim Progress tonight.

Feb. 5, Sat.

Baked mango pies. Gl had a tea for the women – ab't 200. She made 800 cookies – small ones, and a whole big drum of tea with 3 Klim tins of sugar in. Lincolns picked the strawberries & I made jam for them.

Feb. 6, Sun.

A very happy day – communion service. This is being written with a ball point pencil Lora sent me. She sent 2 – said I should give one away. Will we be alone next Sun?

Feb. 7, Mon.

Folks are all packed ready for Lake tomorrow. Worked at letters some. G'ma Green likes to read late & knit so I crochet. All went to bed fairly early tonight.

Feb. 8, Tues.

They got back by 5 & Dr. left ab't then he had a busy day. Had dinner with us but not tea. We had supper at Cls & while talking afteward a truck came, a Swiss Prof of Science & wife – but when we said we had no comfy beds they went to the hotel.

Feb. 9, Wed.

Trying to get letters finished & tomatoes packed & a bag of grape fruit ready. Ab't 4, 3 ladies drove in – they are doing for themselves only sleeping in my house. Cl & Gl had supper here. Children picked berries for their supper.

Feb. 10, Thur.

Lincolns got away by 10. I've picked up some but it was too late to wash clothes & all the boys went for I ate dinner at Gl's. Went over letters & arranged for answering – also sorted & destroyed old receipts. The kitty cries for its sister. I'm staying alone tonight.

Feb. 11, Fri.

Can't think what I did. Wrote some letters. The boys cleaned windows, pembed spots on ceiling in living room & cleaned bed rooms & made up some beds. Big washing done but not dry. Rained a bit. Found Mrs Green's flashlight.

Feb. 12, Sat.

Mas baked dried peach pie and was to make tom. juice but a friend came & he had to go cook for him so I did juice & put it in boiling bath. Ate dinner & supper at Cl's. Paluku cleaned dining room. Wrote Agnes.

Feb. 13, Sun.

How well I remember last year. Rained hard here last night - & raining some now. Communion service – Quite a crowd here. Ate at Cls all day – like a guest. Wrote some letters.

Feb. 14, Mon.

A lovely A.M. sunny & cool. Are putting hens back in the pen. Nice mail came – letter from Mrs. Lehrer saying that after 5 wks. at hospital, Mulungit went home & in 4 days was dead. Makes me feel sad. I hope he was at peace with God. Bissetts think he was his face had almost a smile.

Feb. 15, Tues.

When I was eating dinner all at once Myron was at the door. Didn't hear the car. Cl. got away by 8. They met him near Beni. The children have had a good time – now in bath – all settled In their rooms.

Feb. 16, Wed.

Mr. Schuit worked at his car all A.M. I don't seem to do much but get after the workmen. Wrote some & crocheted some. Gl had dinner here.

Feb. 17, Thur.

Got some beef at Mutwanga. Crocheted quite a bit. Wrote some, Myron gave his wife a permanent. Very hard rain.

Feb. 18, Fri.

Jacquemin's hill got hard rain this P.M. but we only a sprinkle. Myron put his radio on the window sill & we got our broadcast at 8 – heard Ray.

Feb. 19, Sat.

Mr. Schuit's birthday. Mas. baked a cake & Gl iced it & put cocoanut on. Terrible wind & rain & hail storm ab't 3 P.M. blew in on all sides – under doors & windows. Many wet spots on ceilings – but no real bad damage done.

Feb. 20, Sun.

A quiet day. A shower this P.M. Will get some planting done tomorrow, I hope. Rain came into Prue's bath room so must get some one to wipe it up. Wish we could see Cl & find out when he is coming home.

Feb. 21, Mon.

Mas. baked buns – do nuts - & had strawberries but not many. Got a few more letters off. Boys washed & their boy ironed their clothes. Ordered break. for 6 oclock.

Feb. 22, Tues.

Slept at Cls. Myrons got away before 7. Hope they saw many animals – then got to Beni in time to collect our mail & take it to Oicha so Cl. can bring it. Told the boys – all but Muhindo they could go & work their gardens – only if guests come then I'll call.

Feb. 23, Wed.

Slept well. Started carding wool from old quilt. Also cut up rags for crocheted rug – needed badly. Timed myself on crochet one medallion for table cloth. Took almost 2 hrs. No Cl. yet.

Feb. 24, Thur.

Cl & Betty came ab't 5:15 – brot stinky elephant and lots of nice mail. I had just finished eating supper so Gl got supper for them. Betty told us of the hard time she had getting to her sisters - & Cl told of their hunt & now I've read my letters & its 9 P.M. so to bed here.

Feb. 25, Fri.

Worked at rug – stockings & Carmels 3 & black plaid dress. It's going to be really pretty. Sent a wire to Furmans to come, Jacquemin will send it tomorrow when he goes to Beni. Betty here for break and both of us at Cls. Wrote some letters.

Feb. 26, Sat.

Queer Sat. but got lots done at the rug - & Cl. put tape on the quilt frames. I baked mango pie & made lemon filling. Had fried mush supper at Gls. Gov't says men must work 8 hrs. & get 8 Fr. so we are laying off some.

Feb. 27, Sun.

Very quiet day with no guests. Muhindo makes fire & does chicken work. He is to be married on Tues. so will have that day off. Betty & I ate dinner & supper at Gls. - nice change.

Feb. 28, Mon.

Paluku was to come but didn't so I made tom-juice & took care of chickens. Men all went to get elephant meat – 2 were trapped. Mas. & Metusale came for pay - & got all the others too. Hard rain this P.M. No clothes got dry.

Mar. 1, Tues.

Muhindo & Marie were married today but I didn't go because Gl. said she wasn't going – sorry I missed it. Ab't 5:30 Mary Deans & the Browns & Dr. Wier drove in. Gl got supper. I made up beds. Cls are packed ready to go to out schools. The guests want to go to Lake tomorrow.

Mar. 2, Wed.

All had breakfast here & the car left for the Lake. Will return Fri. Then Gl & Cl left with the carriers. Today begins the 8 hr. work day. Got the mail man off for Oicha & Beni. Paluku is on the job but I hope Muhindo comes tomorrow & goes for meat. Typed at schedules.

Mar. 3, Thur.

Worked at the typing all day. Baked 1 loaf of bread but didn't rise well. Felt punk most of the day. Sleepy now. Buramu went for meat – got beef. Roses at my garage are lovely now.

Mar. 4, Fri.

9:45 & have just finished the typing. The folks from Lake came ab't 11 & wanted to go right on but stopt for dinner. Then left for Nyankundi. Just as they got away it rained torrents. Mr. Jacquemin says he sent my wire to Furmans Sat. It is so dated. No mail man yet. Prue ate dinner here.

Mar. 5, Sat.

Baked buns & they got very nice. Also “filled cookies”. Betty had supper with me. Buns, salad, cheese, sliced bananas & cream & cake & coffee. Mail came - & butter [?] on parcels of books of Betty's. Nice home letters – no radio these days our battery is done.

Mar. 6, Sun.

My head was bad all A.M. but went to mtg. Elia spoke well. Betty here to dinner and supper. Quiet day – sure enuf – too much so. Took aspirin so head is better. We read from a new book of Betty's.

Mar. 7, Mon.

They came in ab't 1 P.M. so tired for every step was up hill. Had baths & rested & had supper here. Busy looking over mail. Washed quite a wash – didn't get dry tho no rain – only heavy clouds early morning.

Mar. 8, Tues.

Yes, yes, 2 yrs ago I hardly saw myself like this. I really thot I would never do much again. Dr. came & brot Myron Schuit and Phil. They took the kitten. I miss the little thing. Dr. worked til 5:45 & had such a load. Took a lot of canned vegs – as she is out & still has guests.

Mar. 9, Wed.

Mail man finally got away. Gl. had a lot to finish. We had the wood men weigh their loads. Will pay what the hospital pays but they will have to bring quite a bit more, if they want 9 Fr. a day.

Mar. 10, Thur.

Masikini came for Paluku wants time to fix his house & Muhindo went for meat. Mas. is trimming the hedge at my house. Have about finished crocheted stocking rug. Spent all evening making out a small order for Wards.

Mar. 11, Fri.

Mail came & wire from Furmans “can't come”. So that's that - & I shall get at the quilt soon as Cls get away on Tues. Am asking Mas. to come & help til then. Give Gl time to pack. Letter from Cunninghams – Wamba, saying they have a son. Rug is finished.

Mar. 12, Sat.

Mas. came. Baked pie (mango) for tomorrow and cake for safari – and canned 5 qts tomatoes. Had dinner & supper at Cls. 2 tall poles are up for wire from turbine he put in some fixtures. If they weren't going to outschools they'd soon have things connected up.

Mar. 13, Sun.

A blessed communion service with a good number in from the out districts. Dinner & supper at Cls. Wrote some – read some - & rested. Evening service here.

Mar. 14, Mon.

How well I remember a year ago – Cls ate dinner & supper here and as they are not leaving til Wed. they eat here all day tomorrow. Remembered last night that Janzens from Kikwit want to come now most any day. Wrote letters.

Mar. 15, Tues.

Wrote at letters. Mas. baked for the safari. Wonder if Mrs. Propst is in Nairobi tonight ready for her plane tomorrow at 7:30 A.M. Wood men are getting nasty – brot only 22 kilos today & were told to bring 50. Hope the women will soon bring wood for us to buy. Cl – finished the toilet!!

Mar. 16, Wed.

They left after breakfast. Muhindo went with them & brot back a set of animal pictures that I want to send to Fay. Got letters finished up & got the mail man off about 4:30. Canned 5 pts. of corn. More to do tomorrow.

Mar. 17, Thur.

W'at a day! 9 tourists came ab't 10 A.M. We had coffee on the veranda. Betty's girls came & sang for them. They took several pictures & when they left gave us money ab't 100 Frcs. & $35. Thank God for it all. Mas. canned corn. I have quilt ready for on frame.

Mar. 18, Fri.

No mail man yet. Cls sent word by some one that they were going to Matungu today. Betty whitewashed her dining room. I have the quilt set up ready to tie. My eyes have blurred twice today. Are at it now – going to bed.

Mar. 19, Sat.

Nice mail. Batteries from Lo. Nice letter from Ray wanting me to plan to go with them on furlo. Bless his heart. Marian Settles wants to come Apr. 19 – for 4 wks. Stams come for dinner Apr. 22. Muhindo does all the work – Prue here to supper.

Mar. 20, Sun.

Mrs. Propst was to land in N.Y. at 9:30 this morning. I'll hear later. Quiet day here. Prue her to meals. Read & wrote & talked.

Mar. 21, Mon.

I'm well started with tying the quilt. 6 youngster worked at cutting grass in the road – drive way. Have asked for Mas. tomorrow to bake bread & cookies for Gl.

Mar. 22, Tues.

The man from Cl. got here ab't 5 – with a chicken, eggs, a few vegs & a letter. Mas. baked so I have the basket packed with bread, cookies – etc. They may be back on Mon. Hope so. No supper.

Mar. 23, Wed.

Made tomato juice – in bottles boiled & sealed. Got man sent off by 7:30. Hope he reaches them tomorrow. Also got mail man off. Worked at quilt some. Again no supper. I don't miss it & slept fine last night.

Mar. 24, Thur.

Finished tying the quilt. Now needs sewing all around & I want to put muslin protection on it. Heavy fog this morning that turned to rain – but men worked – not the grass cutter boys. Wrote Della W.

Mar. 25, Fri.

Finished quilt but must still put on the protection. Mail came – no airs from the girls tho Gl. had one from her mother. A man said he was going out to them so I sent their letters. Bot wood from women – stacked all over – didn't expect it today. Fr. 348. [348 Francs]

Mar. 26, Sat.

Baked a “Jam Dandies” and seems pretty good. Another note from Gl. they were at Ibatama school this morning. Man got here ab't 7 – brot 2 more chicks. Moved ours up here again. They haven't laid 1 egg down there since first day or 2.

Mar. 27, Sun.

Now we expect her back soon. & Mary H goes Apr. 20. Hope this is the last Sun. we are alone. Rained after church. Played records & I read another Bonar sermon.

Mar. 28, Mon.

Floyd's 20th anniversary. Nothing much to record for today. Mas. came & baked bread. No one has come yet. Looked pretty rainy much of the time down Kisindi way, but hope they have finished up their work.

Mar. 29, Tues.

Cls got in ab't 5. but still no guests. Cls had a good time but got very tired – had so much rain that made the paths slippery. But their visit was greatly appreciated as they brot back 8 or 10 chickens & lots of eggs. They eat here til they get their rooms straight.

Mar. 30, Wed.

Cls ate here - & will again for no guests have come yet. Got mail man off. Measured thrd for table cloth & will have just enuf – if I measured right. Raining tonight. Planted lots of seed – hope native chickens leave it alone.

Mar. 31, Thurs.

Cl. is putting the wire up from the turbine. Pay day and thank God I had enuf. There is a change necessary for Gov't says we must pay more – so Koronelio and Paluku were signed off and Mas., Metusela, & Muhindo must do the work. We will pay Fr. 9+ per day!!!

Apr. 1, Fri.

And Harters really did Apr. fool me. Maybe they needed an extra day or 2 to finish Miss Cowell's house roof. Will see what the mail brings tomorrow. This seems the day for them to be coming or going.

Apr. 2, Sat.

Still no guests, but letters asking for room. Edith Mac Lennan & Miss Underwood want to come in May. I hardly know what to say, for if all come who have asked we will be pretty full. Word from Office that Co has sent 500. for furlo. Thank God – now more for the house & Cls furlo.

Apr. 3, Sun.

All ate here all day. How well I remember a yr ago. All mtgs as usual – so nice to have Gl. & the instrument at mtg. The cornetist dropt his instrument off the car & it is badly bunged up. Gl. gets breakfast for Cl & Prue.

Apr. 4, Mon.

They got away ab't 6. I ate break there & Gl ate dinner here. Boys pembed her living room. I made 2 small dresses from pieces. Gl is sleeping here & wrote Mrs. Williams. Expect Dr. out tomorrow.

Apr. 5, Tues.

Quite a different day. Dr. & Nina came ab't 1 & we had just finished lunch when Dr. Nelsons came. His parents are here. Then as all left a couple came from the hotel. Gl. showed them the church etc. Then it was dark & we have been writing letters. Miss Cowell arrived at Bogoro yesterday & her house is not finished so that is probably the reason Harters have not come.

Apr. 6, Wed.

Such a very quiet day - finished sewing one apron for Mas. to put on when waiting on table – sort of cover all. Rained again. Mail left. Gl. types S.S. lessons evenings, I write.

Apr. 7, Thur.

And now our aloneness is over for Porter, Wambold & Miss Howard came ab't 5:30. They were on their way to Kampala & couldn't pass customs because they had not the required papers. Engine No. or something. Gl. will move back tomorrow for sleeping. Cl & Betty may be back Sat.

Apr. 8, Fri.

Mail brot word that Uncle Richard has gone to Glory. How thankful we all are. Harters didn't get Miss Cowell's house finished so will come another time. Miss Settles & Meredith will come 20. Girls took walk up water ditch also to falls.

Apr. 9, Sat.

No Cl yet – sorry because out school teachers are in for communion tomorrow. Janzens came ab't supper time. Baked as per usual. I helpt quite a bit in kitchen – tho the boys do very well.

Apr. 10, Sun.

Easter Cl. didn't come so no communion service. Rained hard at church time but we went. Women sang very nice. Misses Wambold & Porter sang too. Quiet P.M. after good chicken dinner. Evening I read from Graham's book “Peace with God”.

Apr. 11, Mon.

This being a holiday Cl couldn't shop so we suppose they will come tomorrow. Rained so clothes aren't dry. So cold & wet we had fire in grate. Putting curtains up in my house for Vera & Miss Wellson will stay there.

Apr. 12, Tues.

And they aren't here yet 8:30. So we all go to bed. We had supper for 11. Table set & all. Now we do wonder what's keeping them. The girls : Wambold, Porter & Howard are all packed, ready to go to the Lake. They had hoped Vera & Miss Willson w'd go too.

Apr. 13, Wed.

The girls got away by 5 – and Cl, Betty, Vera & Anne W. came ab't 11:30. The Com didn't finish til yesterday. That's what kept them. the 3 ladies got stuck in the mud & then a spring slipt so they had to leave the car at the turn off. Jack Ingles brot them up. Cl takes them to the car in the morning.

Apr. 14, Thur.

Cl & the 3 left after 6 oclock breakfast. Cl. fixed their car & they went on to Irumu to meet Miss White coming from Yaknou [?] by plane. Mas. cut up the pig – 40 kilos of meat @ 17. a Kilo. Gl took half. I made bacon & ham of the shoulder - & some for several dinners.

Apr. 15, Fri.

How a yr. ago is so clear in my mind – and what a yr. I certainly expected by this time to be in my house. Cl. thinks he may be able to turn on the power tomorrow. We sure hope it will work. Made candy & baked toll house for Rays.

Apr. 16, Sat.

HURRA the electric lights are on. Betty got a pretty shade for the living room light. Gl had my birthday supper tonight & we ate by electric light. It's so nice – and we do thank God for the Lusilubi and Claudon.

Apr. 17, Sun.

A lovely sunny spring day. Should have liked such a day last Sun. Rested & wrote letters ready for Cls to take Tues. We didn't turn on the lights as more work must be done. Only 8 today – Next Sun expect ab't 17.

Apr. 18, Mon.

Cl. worked at the turbine but still needs some thing – lights came on fine but went out as tho the belt slipt. They expect to leave in the morning. Vera & Anne Willson go too. There may be 13 coming on Fri.!

Apr. 19, Tues.

They got away before 8 and I'm so glad Janzens are here. Am glad too for these couple of days before the crowd comes. They took the mail man & he is bringing med too for clinic so hope he gets here before noon.

Apr. 20, Wed. [FMS birthday]

Every one went to pay taxes so almost no one worked. It's sure been a dif. birthday. Not a chick or a child here & tho we heard Ray there was no message for he doesn't know we have a battery. Betty F. had us over for supper – such a nice one too – bless her heart. Wonder if Cls are at Aja. Hope to hear in the morning. Nice mail with several birthday letters.

Apr. 21, Thur.

The ladies (Marian S. & Ruth Meredith) came. We tried to hear Aja this morn. but they were not on. Ladies say Stams & Vans will come tomorrow noon – at Oicha tonight. Muhindo got 8 kilos of pork - & it had been killed yesterday so we had to cook it all & we pressured 3 qts. & roasted the rest for Sun.

Apr. 22, Fri.

Stams came by 11:30 & Jessie Webb. Brot lovely birthday letters – one from Ray with Frcs 500 in it. Vans will be here next Thur. Aja said Cls got there OK. Stams went to river also ladies. They played “Scrabble” - so did Betty & Dorothy last eve so I got quite a lot of crocheting done.

Apr. 23, Sat.

I wakened ab't 1 A.M. with discomfort around my heart – not sharp pain but got worse & abt 4 I vomited then slept a bit. Mrs. Janzen suggested “acid” & that was it I drank lemonade & had lemon sauce on cake. Elia took blood slide – neg. & stethoscope just said thumping a bit but reg. Staid in bed til 9:30 & have felt OK since.

Apr. 24, Sun.

I didn't go to church. Mr. Stam preached. Boys did up the work then we got our supper - & washed dishes. Had a good sleep. Mr S read from Betty's book by Robertson – It's Dynamics.

Apr. 25, Mon.

Everyone's boys washing but a fine day so all got dry. Hereafter Stams boy will wash at Gl's. Radio said Harold was going out to set up camp. I hoped it w'd say they are coming home. Got some letters off. Mas. pretty well takes care of kitchen.

Apr. 26, Tues.

Mr Stam's 38th birthday. Mas baked & iced a cake & She decorated it. They all went to the hotel for a swim & to look around. I bot a pig. 37 Kilos @ 13. so the help gets some too. I'll see what I can do with it all. Perhaps Prue will take some for the girls.

Apr. 27, Wed.

The ice box had gone off & I really had a scare because I wanted to put meat in. Seems OK now, thank God. Will Vans be here tomorrow night? Beds are ready (at Cls) any time they come. Made a bit of jam – got some lard – Prue took 6 Kilos.

Apr. 28, Thur.

Mail brot word from Jensens they'd come today – but they haven't nor Vans either – and another letter said Feltons from TT want to come next week. Janzens took their battery we've been using on radio & Stams is down so guess we wont hear when Cls come.

Apr. 29, Fri.

Vans did come ab't 10 last night. Pete showed them their rooms. They didn't want any supper only bed. Had a broken spring & other trouble which made them 6 hrs late. Had nice visit today – cafateria supper with do nuts & coffee. They want to be off by 7. Janzens left after breakfast for Oicha.

Apr. 30, Sat.

Vans left after early breakfast. Work ab't as usual. Couldn't pay the help til Cl comes & I can get cash – but I'm thankful I have the check for the cash. Since supper dropt oven grate on my toe & it is sore.

May 1, Sun.

Quiet day with all services as usual. My toe has not troubled & I've worn my shoe. It hurts but not bad. Mr. Stam read H. Bonar sermon – we sang & then talked. Hope Cls w'll be here next Sun.

May 2, Mon.

Folks went to Mutwanga to see the snow and brot me a debe of kerosene and found a beef being butchered and brot 5 kilos. I'm so grateful. Petersons called at supper time & left frozen fish & rose cuttings. I wanted to know abt the boys: Paluku & Naren coming to help them.

May 3, Tues.

Dr. came & brot Miss Lohrman. We had just started to eat. It was only 12:15. Brot my birthday parcel from Co. Such pretty things – some glasses for juice – 1 broken & plastic bowls – 3 broken. Some things for new house. A scientist & wife called. Dr. left by 4.

May 4, Wed.

We all went to the hotel for lunch. 'Twas very nice. Met Arlette's husband. Very red hair. Also saw her parents. The lunch was very nice. Saw some pretty dogs – pups are valued at Fr. 4,000 each. Saw 2 lights come down the hill & thot one might be Cls. but it isn't coming up here. [From Ruwenzori station at night car lights could be seen coming from Beni down Caparata's hill toward Mutwanga, then from Mutwanga up the hill toward the station.]

May 5, Thur.

! Notice 5-5-55! This wont happen again til 6-6-66. Mail came. Jensens wired can't come. Kopple wired asking to come this wk wants a reply by wire!! They are all packed for the Park in the morning & have all the alarm clocks. Wonder if we will be a crowd tomorrow night. Hope so for I do want Cls back also to see Feltons of T.T.

May 6, Fri.

No one here yet tho we had a supper for all. Folks came back from Lake by H & had 10 lovely fish @ 4. We had some for supper – but I put the strawberries into the ice box for tomorrow whether or not folks come. Wrote the girls.

May 7, Sat.

Cls came ab't 7:30. Got into lots of rain & were too late to go to Beni. They had supper here then baths & to bed. Mr. & Mrs. Stam went to hotel to dinner at 8. Don't feel very good, in my tummy.

May 8, Sun.

Didn't go to A.M. service – felt too ill. I tried to get rid of my supper but wasn't successful so drank soda but didn't do much ab't food. Gl. saw to it. I lay down mostly. Baby Stam was ill so they decided to go to Oicha right away & then on tomorrow. They had things partly packed because they expected to leave tomorrow. All had supper here.

May 9, Mon.

Felt all weak & washed out but this eve am much better. Went over the parcel with Gl. & Faith – again so thankful for all. The shoes are too large for Faith but she will grow into them. Got cash from Cl. so will pay the boys tomorrow.

May 10, Tues.

Gl & Betty were both sick all night & Masi. too – got break – then went home. Paid them all. but Mas does not like the arrangement. Says he has no time to work in his garden. Got some mail off. Cl. seems to be coming down with the same thing – vomitting & loose bowels. Seems to be an epidemic. Gl & Betty are better this eve.

May 11, Wed.

Tuckers came in last night at 10:30. Cl came & called Miss Meredith to open the door. They slept in these rooms tho they preferred to move down to my house so are settled there. They had supper at Cls. Betty ate here – waffles! Mas. was here all day but Muhindo had the day off. Finished joining 2 rows of 12 motifs for cloth.

May 12, Thur.

A lovely big parcel came in the mail from Co. Angy sent records for my birthday & the best one was broken. Jessie & ladies ate at Gls tonight. Cl has been working at turbine all day & hopes to get it going tomorrow for lights!

May 13, Fri.

LIGHTS! This is a very lucky day for us – for Cl. has the lights on good & bright. Only thing now is the gate to turn them off. It's so nice. Wonder if Rays will be here tomorrow night. Jessie & I hulled all the berries for tomorrow night. Folks playing Scrabble, most 9 P.M.

May 14, Sat.

Rays came ab't 5 in pouring rain & got stuck & walked up – ie Sara & the girls. Got hot baths right away. All here to cheese souffle supper, & chat & some gram. So nice having lights. Gl's cook left – says too much work for too little pay!

May 15, Sun.

Every one went to church. Children had S.S. here. Jessie & MA carried on. Tuckers eating with Gl. til girls go tomorrow. All had sandwich supper here. Ray gave us a tape Bible lesson – by Pultz of Houston Texas. Very good.

May 16, Mon.

Ladies left after pr mtg. Boy had a big wash even tho Sara & Angeline did some too. No rain but lots of threat. Rays had supper at Cls. Only 8:40 but every one ready for bed. Didn't do the tape tonight but will tomorrow.

May 17, Tues.

The lunch & breakfast are packed. All are going but Cl. Gl. Sara & I. All went to the hotel to swim. Sara made pineapple jam. Now the rest Gl & I will can. Ray is finishing a tape to J & B and also to Texas friends.

May 18, Wed.

All but Sara, Sally, Gl & I went to Lake. Cl. left for Oicha & Aru, ab't 9:30. Folks returned ab't 4:30 with 15 fish – and we had all we c'd eat for supper & lots left for tomorrow. Letter from Al in which she says Lynn was electrocuted – no details.

May 19, Thur.

Klines came in – so nice to see 'em. They went swimming & lunched at hotel. Ray took the crowd down for swimming. Cafateria supper here for Billys birthday. Rays are all set for going early. How I shall miss'em. Klines said McAllisters want to come on Sat.

May 20, Fri.

Rays left by 4:30. I was up – spent most of the day picking up & cleaning. Opened the rest of the Christmas parcels. Faith, Dick & Billy did it – such fun. They were very interesting. Seem a very small family. Alone tonight.

May 21, Sat.

Mc Allisters got here for dinner. The baby is a smiley happy boy. Mr. had a filaria cyst removed & must see Dr. again. Jewell O. is back. Baked pie for all. All had supper here.

May 22, Sun.

Went to church. Mrs Mc A. sang. Also at our mtg tonight. I do get so sleepy druing A.M. service. I must see what I can do ab't it. Mr. Mc A turned off the lights this eve. Wonder how Cora celebrated.

May 23, Mon.

Getting letters ready to send by Tuckers Wed. They & Gls went swimming at the hotel. Mr Mc A. is not feeling well. The wound troubles. Hope Dr. will soon get back.

May 24, Tues.

All ate supper here. Mas. made 2 cherry pies. Gl bot a tall bottle of them at Nioka & they were so good. Popped some corn too. Mr. Mc A. went to Oicha for med. help. Got back 4:30. Guess Tuckers are all packed. I gave the children all goodby. Made 4 tall tins of jam. Berries are on hand.

May 25, Wed.

They got away ab't 4:30 & Cl came in just before dinner. He saw the children at Oicha. Brot nice mail. Letters told more ab't Lynns death – he & Vernon Blackert were repairing telephone wires & one they held touched hi power wire & both were knocked down & were unconscious. Vernon recovered but Lynn died in 20 min.

May 26, Thur.

Cleaned up my house - but Pecks are not coming til June 30 to July 31. Nice having Cl here on the lights – they are so nice & bright. We talked. They ask ab't the old days - & I get going & can't stop. I'm sorry to have them go. Billy is into everything – stept on & mashed one of my little chicks.

May 27, Fri.

Cleaned bed rooms. Folks left after pr mtg. so I'm alone. Have sort of an uncomfortable feeling to have all lights on & only me to use 'em. Had talk with Mas & Cl & Gl. I raise his pay to 14 a day & he has some PMs off. Wrote Mrs. Johnston. She has cancer of rectum.

May 28, Sat.

Cleaned dining room - & put Gl's fiber mat on top of worn one. Ate dinner & supper there. Boys plastered holes in kitchen ready for pembe Mon. Man came from Oicha with school stuff for Betty. It's so nice having elec. lights.

May 29, Sun.

Ate at Cls all day. Betty too for supper. Pastor is back after 2 wks. up north. Reports 22 decisions for Christ. Cl. spoke so well on the Sower & power of prayer. Benj. came up & said his wife is ill. Gl & Cl went down & she is in a coma since 3 P.M. If no better by morn. they'll start to Biasiko tomorrow & take her to Oicha.

May 30, Mon.

Muhindo sick. Mas. pembed the kitchen. Cl found broken spring & worked til after dark – so no elec. lights tonight. He kicked the stone from under wheel & thot he had the car in gear but it wasn't, so it backed across the road & knocked fence of one chicken yard over. Chickens in other end.

May 31, Tues.

They got away a bit after 7 – had breakfast here. Mas. cleaned up pembe in kitchen. I paid the help and I'm so grateful I had the money. Frcs. 1146 for only 3 house boys!! Garden men 600, yd. boys 80.

Jun. 1, Wed.

I found Edna Porters letter & check way back in the middle drawer. I had put it onto my diary as I do all letters that need immediate attention, & it got pushed back. We cleaned living room. Now everything is pretty well ready for guests.

Jun. 2, Thur.

Rather miserable – bad tummy – dizzy – better this eve. Downeys came ab't 5. Betty came over & we laughed & talked. Boys killed a 50 kilo pig. Picked berries. Made 4 large tins of jam & a large bowl of fresh ones. Mas. did most of the work.

Jun. 3, Fri.

Plenty works” cutting up the meat & frying out the lard. Ab't 7 Mr & Mrs. Lenhartzen came with a young man from Leo. Betty helpt me make up beds & get supper. Now all is ready. Dr. sent word he will come tomorrow as the road is closed on Tues because of the king.

Jun. 4, Sat.

Again Mas. staid all day. Dr came abt 12:45 – got done too early to have tea. They go to Rethy on Thur. & on down to Nairobi on Fri. etc. Mtgs begin on Sun.

There are ab't 400 blocks behind the house. Also may bring more iron. Lenhartzens leave tomorrow after mtg. Mr. Ogren stays on. He wrote Cl. ab't it but I didn't open the letter.

Services as per usual – not very many Kitambala [Kingwana word for “cloth”] preached. Mr. Mrs. Lenhartzen left right after service. Had lunch with them. Mr Downey read from “It's Dynamite”. Very good. We pray they may have had a spiritual feast at Biasiko. The Lord helpt me stay awake.

Jun. 6, Mon.

Washed out my blue figured dress & ironed to wear tomorrow. Sun was out this P.M. so things got dry. School opened with a bang – Betty teaches til 6. Hope that can be changed. Moved Mr Ogren up here. He is from Joliet, Ill.

Jun. 7, Tues.

He came 5 hrs late and then his car stopt only for a min. while he took 2 boquets from some children. No one got a picture for he went on to the hotel. Arlette brot some bun sandwiches to all whites as it was getting so late. He arrived ab't 2. Many of our folks didn't go. No Cl yet so perhaps tomorrow.

Jun. 8, Wed.

Cls got here just at dark. Were out at the Uganda road since 12 couldn't come because the Kings car was expected – he came ab't 5:30. Then they hustled in & Butembo & Katwa made big preparations & he gave them only a wave. Every one is very disappointed. They brot a nice mail – have only begun to read it.

My, it's nice having Cls back. Buyses may come for the wk. end. Trying to get some letters off. Made some bread & butter pickles & have roselle bud juice ready for pectin & sugar. Nice bright lights.

Gl. heard just the last of the news this morning when Ray announced that Philip Schuit died last night. He was ab't 3 yrs. Folks are all packed for the Lake in the morning - & on Mon the 3 men start up the Mt. So must bake plenty tomorrow.

Jun. 11, Sat.

Folks got back before 1 but no fish! They wouldn't let them drive across & it was too far for Muhindo to walk & get back. It rained quite hard at supper time. Worked all day & Mas too getting things ready for chop box & tomorrow. Gl gave a tin of pumpkin for pie.

Jun. 12, Sun.

47 were baptised today & accepted into the church. Communion this P.M. All ate dinner here & supper at Cls. Such lots of laughing & chatter & funny experiences - & now getting things together a bit for going up the Mt.

Jun. 13, Mon.

The men got away by 8. Wonder how they got on. Worked at some letters but found man can't go before tomorrow bike is broken so must go on his feet. Col. & Mrs. Sugman – tourists whom Williams met on the boat called – chatted long so didn't get letters finished.

Jun. 14, Tues.

Cl now turns off the lights up here but not on yet. He is making a road down to the river so he can haul sand up because the men just wont bring up decent loads. Picked berries – had dinner at Cls.

Jun. 15, Wed.

Wrote some. Cls here to dinner. Crocheting quite a bit these days. Lights still on 9:45. Mrs Downey & I both finished our motif.

Jun. 16, Thur.

No men yet so they will surely come tomorrow. Muhindo went for meat. Brot beef. Wrote some & did several other things. We have nice times sitting & crocheting & chatting. Such lovely lights – almost better than day light. Ra finished knitting her nephew's cap.

Jun. 17, Fri.

Men got back ab't 10:30. Had a nice time but pretty cold. Made 2 tins of jam for dorm. My head is bad all day – tummy too. Cl will take Mr Ogren to Beni tomorrow.

Jun. 18, Sat.

Usual work. Cl & Mr O. got away ab't 7:30 & Cl got back by 3 and worked at the turbine til supper time. We had no lights because of cement having to dry more. Brot some letters & big cabbages from Klines. I sent strawberries. All had supper here & sat on veranda & talked & laughed. Am going to wash my hair now.

All services as usual. Cl went to Mutwangas for A.M. service. All had dinner here - & supper at Gl's. & evening service here. Wrote some letters. Lights OK tonight.

Jun. 20, Mon.

K's are getting things together. She says Mrs W. wants all cupboards & chairs etc. Gave me quite a shock – but when I saw her later she said only cupboard at end of hall & 2 spindle leg chairs. & she hasn't them yet. No chance. Made copies of the house plan to send to Co & Ray etc. - Hot & dry. No sign of rain. (!!! also – no house 1956)

Jun. 21, Tues.

Did 4 large macaroni tins of st. berry jam and made a pan of candy to send to Billy for his birthday if Amstutzes come this way & go to Rethy. When they pick so many berries I help stem them – so the A.M. goes.

Jun. 22, Wed.

Gl finished the lavendar dress. I hemmed it – put it on – so have a nice house dress. Helen Houchens sent material. Lassie dog ate more eggs – at least broke them so one nest was ab't cleaned out. We will have to keep her tied up. No Amstutzs.

Jun. 23, Thur.

D's [O's?] went to Beni to shop and brot a nice mail. Ward order & other parcels. Nice letters. John & Betty are in Calif. went by bus. Lo had a bad fall on her face – broke cartilage In her nose. Stumbled when crossing a driveway after dark.

Jun. 24, Fri.

Ra had bad toothache in the night so Earl took her to Oicha. Dr gave medicine but wouldn't pull it. Mrs. Becker wrote they saw all the folks from home – Davis, Ferrin & the British folks but none knew when they w'd come here nor if they c'd make it.

Jun. 25, Sat.

Didn't bake buns etc but tried the new checker board cake & it came out pretty good. Cl has a nasty boil on his knee – but he ran the gram. for us. I'm getting the 10 rows of table cloth connected up. Tis pretty.

'Twas dark & cloudy so every one was late – also all meetings & so dinner too. Had quiet P.M. Wrote letters. Ra. has bad tooth ache again. Supper at Gls. Cl's knee is better. Miss Frosts cold is better too.

Jun. 27, Mon.

Raining at daylight & kept it up til after noon. We are glad for it. Killed all the gift chickens. Gl canned 4 qts. I'm having 2 for dinner tomorrow. Gave mine a needle again. Getting Ward order (small) off.

Jun. 28, Tues.

Masikini went to town with Mr. Jacquemin so I was rather busy in kitchen. Picked berries too & made 3 tins of jam again. Cl is still limping it hasn't really opened yet. The guests have packed lunch & will have early breakfast.

Jun. 29, Wed.

Downeys left ab't 7. Radio announced Mrs. Faulkner passed away after a stroke. So sorry for the 3 children especially. No one has come & altho we listened at 5:30 there seemed no word – tho static was bad. So we do not know if anyone has come to Rethy or Oicha – expect Pecks tomorrow.

Pecks came ab't 4:30. They came from the Lake – spent last night there. They were hot & dusty so enjoyed baths. Cls ate supper here. New cement work at the turbine so no lights tonight. Nice mail. Letters from Ray & money. John & Betty in Calif.

Harters came In time for dinner and are settled in their room. Cement work no good so again no electric lights but Sun Flame does well with new generator. H's brot butter, eggs, brown sugar 4 packages!!! Cls knee is getting better. Made Klim tin of jam.

Jul. 2, Sat.

Stormed hard – thunder & lightning & heavy rain before day light & rain kept up til noon. Usual baking – cafeteria here mac. & sausage – deviled eggs & carrot sticks, strawberry ice cream & Mas.'s cake. How we do remember a yr ago.

Jul. 3, Sun.

Wonder how Agnes celebrated. Cl. went to an out school & we all to church & some one went into their room & ransacked thro every thing evidently looking for money for they took only flash light & key - & bent up the lid of the cash box of church money but couldn't get any out.

Jul. 4, Mon.

The boy went down to my house to sweep – but found some of the ceiling down so Gl & I went down to see & found some one had been in & messed up all the beds & taken lots of blankets – spreads, table covers etc. Cl found the door key on the rabbit hutch behind my house.

Jul. 5, Tues.

Dr. came and brot Messers D.M. Miller, Henman, Holman & Lloyd. Mr Lloyd is staying til Fri. It was rainy & cloudy so they got no pictures. It was so nice to see Mr. Miller. We had a nice chat. Dr. didn't finish til 5:30. We had tea ab't 4. Sent some of the jam because Mr Miller goes to Rethy tomorrow. Mr L. stays at Cls. Stanley tried to tell us they were coming but his mike is no good.

Jul. 6, Wed.

Cafateria supper. Cl & Mr Peck worked long at the turbine doing something to steady the machinery. Cl., Lloyd & Peck go to the Lake tomorrow. Gl. made sandwiches. Hope they can bring fish. There is a bit more done at rest home but still not all roofing here tho over half cement blocks made.

Jul. 7, Thur.

Sent boy for meat but it was not good so he came back without. More hens died only 4 left - & 4 of 1 mo. & 5 of couple days.

Folks had nice time at Lake but brot no fish. Shirley has fever but they hope to leave early in the morning. Lunch packed etc.

Jul. 8, Fri.

Pecks got away by 6:30. Bot a lot more wood – pd. back what we borrowed from Cl. too. Very few berries today. Mr Lloyd took Cl & Gl to hotel for supper. Went early to take pictures. Quite a heavy rain several times.

Jul. 9, Sat.

No word ab't Brand. All had supper here around the table. Usual baking but no bread. Wrote home folks. Cls had a nice time last night but got stuck near dispensary for we had heavy rain.

Jul. 10, Sun.

Brand came just as we were ready to serve dinner. Then the Watkins family came just as we sat down. Said they had lunch but ate cookies & coffee. Brand & Lloyd left ab't 4. All 13 at Cls for supper.

Jul. 11, Mon.

Killed quite a large pig, 676 Fr., 52 kilos live weight. Rainy so clothes didn't dry.

Jul. 12, Tues.

Watkins left in good time for Lake expecting to go to Queen Eliz Park for the night, but they wouldn't let them take their car out of Congo – so they came back & will take Cls tomorrow. Cl & Gl went to Oicha & Beni. Got things for me too. Their camera was there – 1200 Frcs customs!!! All here to supper - 13 of us tomorrow night.

I wrote in the wrong day. Took care of the meat. Nice lot of lard. Made ham too. Watkins were at the hotel swimming most all P.M. Lovely day.

Jul. 14, Thur.

Harters left first after breakfast then Cl & Gl with their porters. Hope they reached the village in good time. Watkins left then in Cl's car & as they haven't returned we spose they got to the Lodge. Mr K - brot Williams – had lunch & loaded up the car with their things. Still some here. Hard rain just at dark.

Jul. 15, Fri.

Went thro the garden – not much food there now but coming on. The folks got back ab't 7. Then couldn't get lights on at first something clogged – but later OK. Bot more wood. Seems I sh'd have enuf til kingdom come.

Jul. 16, Sat.

Letter from Gl. saying her ft got sore because of new shoes, so she changed on the path. Cl had trouble with feet & hands itching – finally decided it was hives from too much rhubarb & want a man to bring the screen for pictures & will send for bread next wk. Mr. Watkins worked at turbine all P.M. Music this eve. They put puzzle together.

Jul. 17, Sun.

Rained a lot in the night but cleared for S.S. & church. Mr. & Mrs. Watkins are returning from dinner at the hotel and it is 9:30. Wrote Gl. Mr. W. said it is their 30th: he has been married for 15 yrs & so has she! Betty read Bible story.

Jul. 18, Mon.

Hope Ray had a nice day. We baked peanut cookies but they are like candy. Made some fudge for David's birthday tomorrow. Metusela had an affair ab't bumping into a fellow with his bicycle & the fellow wants to fine him several hundred Frcs!!! We shall see.

Jul. 19, Tues.

David's birthday. Mas. baked a checker cake & buns & Betty gave weiners & we had picnic supper in little park – popcorn too. W's pretty well packed & ready for early breakfast. Gl sent eggs & chicks & we will bake for them tomorrow & a man will leave Thur.

Jul. 20, Wed.

They got away ab't 7:15 & then boys took out all mats – bed rooms & dining room but it's so rainy none are dry. Baked bread & cookies to send out. 3 or 4 left this morning to attend the wk. end Conf at Kasangalis. A man will go tomorrow with food things.

Jul. 21, Thur.

Cleaned more rooms & put down mats but the dining room mat is still wet so keep on veranda to dry. No mail man. Betty says this is a holiday. We had pr mtg instead of school a special call for Congo.

Jul. 22, Fri.

Washed big wash but none got dry. A leopard got Muhindo's rabbit last night so they set a trap & I shut up Lassie in the magazine & ab't 7:30 a dog howled & cried & yelped & barked all in one breath. I thot it was Lassie but Mas. came to see the trouble & found his dog in the trap. Guess no leopard will come after that kilele [Kingwana for “commotion”].

I baked a few buns & made coffee cake & filled pie crust with raisins. Mail came just after broadcast. Quite a nice lot. Many belated magazines.

Beautiful A.M. like June. Didn't sleep so well last night but was able to stay awake thro a long sermon. Betty ate dinner & supper here – then we had music & I read an article by H. Bonar & we talked & now it's 9:30. Cloudy & rainy P.M.

Jul. 25, Mon.

Wash dried some but much is still wet. Mas. comes now & Muh [Muhindo] has time off. When I went to bed last night found Gl's cat having her kittens on my bed. She has 4 & is now over in the magazine where I made a bed for her but she didn't like it. She has staid there today.

Men came ab't noon with 5 chickens & some eggs & nice letter. They had a blessed 3 day Conf. with people from all over the dist. They have more schools to visit before coming back – but expect to get in on Sat.

Radio said Paul Buyses were bringing Jane, the baby, to Oicha to Dr. & she died before they got there. Poor Kathryn!

Told Metusela he could have a wk or 2 off to move to our village. If I need help Koronelio will help a bit.

Baked bread & fixed up a parcel for Cl & Gl. A man got it & will go with all carriers to Kikingi tomorrow & hope they will get back on Sat. Saw snow on our peaks yesterday. It's pretty cold these days & nights.

Will they be here by tomorrow night? Men got away this morning so hope we will be a united family again.

Mail came. Little Janie Buyse was sitting in her hi chair when she went into convulsion & didn't gain consciousness again. So hard for Kathryn. Radio said L. Buyses came last eve.

They got in ab't 4:30. Gl has a huge raw blister on heel. Ab't 11 Israele & Matayo came & said they had found the boys who took the things from guest house & tried to rob church money box. Had a long trial – a crowd gathered on lawn. Cl took culprits to Mr. Van Hamme – Admtr.

Quiet day – services as usual. All ate here all day. Talked long at eve mtg telling of their safari. God blest them & used them in blessing to others. How I remember a yr. ago. Must write Beth a birthday letter tomorrow.

Paid all the help – Thank God. I had had my dinner & nap when Eksters came. Apolo came & helped. Muhindo had gone for vegs. Mas. has 1 wk off if he wants it. Getting letters off.

No Dr. came – but some tourists brot here by Mr. Cook chauffeur. Very nice ladies & a So Af. man. Gl. took them around. They left a bit of money. Baked buns & got very nice.

The folks think they must go by Fri. for they want to see Dr. May go there & return for over Sun. Baked up-side-down cake. I keep busy in kitchen all A.M.

In kitchen all A.M. Folks decided to go to Oicha tomorrow as Mr. E. must see Dr. They wont return. They take more of Williams things. Mail came brot word of Ronnie Westervelt drowning.

Gave Prue the blue pieced cushion top & cushion. The Eksters got away ab't 9. Prue busy in school so couldn't come. Gl. at womens mtg & couldn't come so Cl & I helped E's load (they took a lot of W's things). Then went to work – I pickled cucs – worked at covering blanket.

Aug. 6, Sat.

Baked all A.M. All had birthday party supper here for both Betty & Gl. I had dinner at Cls. Dr. came but we had just finished eating. Sent some things to Eksters to take to Ray.

How well I remember last yr. Muhindo had the day off. I ate at Cls all day. Spect Betty & I will be alone next Sun. unless the Bukavu ladies come early – as I suggested they could.

Aug. 8, Mon.

Metusela washed. Masikini came when I called because Muhindo is sick. Quite a bit of sickness these days. Car all packed – sewing machine goes – I'll miss it. Started sewing pieces on blanket. Will do the rest on Gls machine.

Aug. 9, Tues.

Cl & Gl got away ab't 7. Masi. cleaned buffet shelves & drawers. We got the corner glass cupboard up yesterday so all is arranged there. He painted a water drum too. Zefania one of the Blukwa trained teachers is off in his head some times – like Milaun.

Aug. 10, Wed.

It's 10 P.M. & I've just finished reading my letters. Justin went for the mail & got here ab't 7:30 or 8. Bettys light is still on too. No work nor school today as there was heavy fog & rain all day. Metusela helped in kitchen - will go for meat tomorrow - have asked Mas. to come.

Aug. 11, Thur.

Metusela brot meat. Muhindo came to work. No garden boys yet. Think I'll take one of Gl's tomorrow. Sewed on the blanket & made cushion for the pretty top Miss Howard gave me. Quite large but pretty.

Aug. 12, Fri.

Finished the blanket cover & swept up. Wrote Letha this eve. Elders worked on veranda again most all day – also yesterday - & aren't finished yet. Called one of Gl's men to weed here – mine are both sick. So many sick folks – like flu.

Aug. 13, Sat.

No guests yet so wont come til Mon. I spose. Worked in kitchen all day. Both Mu & Mas have been down with flu. Many are down with it. Word came in mail that Mr. Ekster left his suit case at Kisindi so went to send a bicycler to Oicha to have it announced so they know where it is before they leave Rethy.

Just ab't 4 Betty heard a car trying to get up the hill so we walked down it was by the dispensary & was 2 ladies from Kenya. Mrs. Kline suggested they come. Played records. Justin went with the radio message & will bring the mail. Not many at service but had a good sermon by Matayo.

Aug. 15, Mon.

The Kenya ladies (Faber and Birmingham) left after lunch which we had ready for the four too but they drove to the hotel & had lunch there then came on here. Now are settled in their rooms. Mas. put lights on & now one goes with me to turn them off.

Aug. 16, Tues.

Worked at couch cover of green & yellow blocks. Ladies are putting jig saws together. One more night to put out lights – then Cl will, at least I hope they come Thur. Lots of excitement at Rethy tonight.

Aug. 17, Wed.

Mail came but very little – some parcels there for us perhaps Cls can get them tomorrow. It's raining but must turn the lights off – 9:30 & girls still at jug puzzles. Have been thinking much of the graduation & remembering last yr. Bet J & B are too. Will we be a whole family tomorrow night?

Aug. 18, Thur.

They got here at 7:30 & had had supper at Oicha so just got their mail & didn't come up at all. I got supper for all – Betty too. We ate ab't 6 - & then the boys went home. The ladies say they must leave on the 24th. Epps come the day before.

And now they (Kerstetters) are home because she is so miserable. Nice letters from Ray & Sara & the children. A pr. of nylon stockings from Gl's mother – the last 3 parcels were customs free as all 1st class should be.

Busy in kitchen most all day. Made do nuts & all enjoyed them. Started a sweater for Dick. Want to get it done this vacation. Dark gray & red. Gl is starting one for Cl.

Aug. 21, Sun.

Services as usual. All here to dinner & all at Gls for supper. Had mango, loquat & raisin (all in one pie) – but we had two like that & ate 'em all.

Aug. 22, Mon.

Got the guest house ready for Epps. Mostly kikeri beds – so they will come here as soon as there is room. Have finished the ribbing on Dicks sweater.

Aug. 23, Tues.

Epps came in time for late dinner. Gl. has the 3 older children til my 4 guests leave. Killed a 42 kilo pig. Girls are pretty well packed up. Epps in guest house just for tonight.

Aug. 24, Wed.

Ladies left for Oicha & Katwa right after breakfast. Cleaned rooms & moved Epps up – so all are settled here. Cl took children to hotel for swim. Mrs. Epp went too. Mr. slept most of the P.M.

Lovely parcel from Co. We were just finished with supper when Morises from T.T. drove up. Boys were here still so got some soup from Gl & potatoes to fry & Cl & Gl quickly made up beds in guest house & all are settled for tonight.

Mrs. Moris staid in bed all day with lumbago. Ab't 11:30 Vans came & Clapper, Barth, Stewart. Gl. took 3 ladies & I had Vans – only Lenore. This PM all went to get permission – boys to climb Rw. & Epps for the Lake on the 8th.

Aug. 27, Sat.

The men took the boys to Mutwangas & they started up the Mt. All had supper (spag. & sausage) jello cake. Mrs. M. still in bed. Getting guest house ready for Brands.

Aug. 28, Sun.

Rained just ab't every minute. No S.S. no service. River is high & rubbish stopt the water so turned off the lights & lit the pressure. After mtg girls worked at jigsaws. Almost 10.

Aug. 29, Mon.

Cl., Eldo & most youngsters were ready to start for a walk when the rain poured. Brands & Miss Cowell got in at dark. Loaded heavily so had a time getting up hill. Mrs. Moris came for meals all day. Boys should be at top camp.

Koronelio washed Morises clothes – not all got dry. Had strawberries. Spose boys are at 2nd camp tonight. Com. met all day. Tomorrow Cowell eats dinner here & Betty at Gls.

Boys got back but not til after lunch. Had hearty tea & then supper. Had rain the first day – but none later. They went onto glacier. Cl. showed jubilee pictures by Williams.

Morises & Eldo went to Oicha & Beni. Got some groceries & cash. Myron S's want to come next wk. Baked a large mock fruit cake as it is M's anniversary. Will celebrate tomorrow night.

Busy all day making baked beans, potato chips, boiling debes of water for the Moris folks. Gl iced the cake & put a tiny groom & bride on. They were very pleased. Had strawberries for dinner. Mas. worked all day at meat, fat & meals. Started Lo's letter.

Morises left ab't day light. Stanley & Gary & Mrs. Williams came bringing school boys & getting rabbit hutches. All ate at home tonight. Went to Cls & saw their pictures taken with new camera. Good. Epps enjoy scrabble game.

Sep. 4, Sun.

Kitchen help – or rather the cook has had a long face all day. I think it is because I didn't pay them for the days they didn't work. All had dinner here & supper at Gls. Lois read to the children during our mtg. Rained during church & afterward.

Sep. 5, Mon.

No Schuits have come tho we have beds ready in guest house. Peter, Billy & Dick took knap sacks & blankets & went up to Dad's hut for supper & the night. The 3 girls are in the tent back of guest house – its lightening & threatening rain – so we'll see what happens.

Sep. 6, Tues.

Boys had fine time & are in a tent tonight. Dr came & staid late. Furmans came abt 5:15. Schuits came ab't 7 just as Dr. left. Not knowing Schuits were coming we put F's into the rooms we had made up for them. Epps leave on Thur. then we will get straight.

Sep. 7, Wed.

Cl took the gang to the overhanging rock then they went to Hotel for swim & brot more paipai. Virginia Schuit isn't well & we suspect chicken pox. Furmans went to river where water is turned off [cement dam on Lusilubi where water is diverted to supply turbine ditch] & there killed a horned viper. Epps ab't packed for leaving – Schuits may go on Fri.

Sep. 8, Thur.

Muhindo brot 7 kilos of beef. Eldo has bad night & staid in bed all day. No plans for tomorrow. Virginia has chicken pox so Sylvia is sleeping up here – she's not had it.

Sep. 9, Fri.

Eldo is much better – has been up all day but the rash is still bad & itches but are all packed & ready for the Lake tomorrow. Schuits & Cl & children go too. Furmans will go next wk. Epps will go on to Oicha tomorrow.

Folks all got off to the Lake tho Eldo wasn't too fine & Virginia too seemed pretty miserable. Got back ab't 4 & had tea & packed the car & got off for Oicha. It rained hard just at day light so it was nice having lights on. They brot no fish for they'd not let any car go over & no boy c'd walk in.

Nice communion service. Quite a lot out-school folks here. Gls ate at home because of Virginia. Betty ate here. Mr. Furman & Myron sang after our service – also just Mr. F. - very nice voice.

Schuits left after breakfast. The folks took long walk up the valley along the river. Am getting some letters off. The sweater pattern is getting quite complicated – hope I can manage it.

Sep. 13, Tues.

A beautiful morning but by noon a shower. Had weiner roast at Cls tonight but since it rained at supper time we made fire in fire place & roasted them there. Hd a nice time. Had pop corn – shortened my dress & mended. The pattern in sweater is slow work. Got some letters off.

Sep. 14, Wed.

Mail came in this eve. and the part for the Furman car – so they may be going to the Lake any day. Worked some at knitting. Sewed flower seeds & tomato. Heard Ray on radio.

Sep. 15, Thur.

Mr. Van Hamme came to tea. All had supper at home then came here for dessert of strawberry ice cream & cake then spent eve together. Killed a pig 35 kilos.

Sep. 16, Fri.

The folks are wanting to spend Sun night at the Lake & go to Queen Eliz. Park on Mon. & the night. We shall see. They got more paipai. All here to tea. Planted more sweet peas – wonder when they will bloom. The pork is real nice.

Sep. 17, Sat.

Rawsons came for late dinner. Gl. made nice pudding – so didn't need the cake. Mas. baked ginger bread too & nice social time. Rawsons sleep in guest house.

All went to service. Furman crowd left after dinner for the Lake, & tomorrow to Queen Eliz. Park in Uganda. Rawsons will stay til Tues. just as eve service closed it stormed hard & rained so all staid til it was over.

Sep. 19, Mon.

Didn't send for vegs today. We had nice wax beans from our garden and a native woman brings lettuce & cucumbers. Rained a bit today. Have 2 chicks ready to fry tomorrow. Made candy & toll house cookies. Wonder what John did today.

Sep. 20, Tues.

Rawsons left after breakfast and Cls had chicken dinner here & we fried one for their lunch on the road. The Furman crowd got back ab't 3:30. Had a wonderful time. Saw many animals – one buffalo came from the grass only abt 2 ft away. Cl & children all packed ready to leave early.

Sep. 21, Wed.

They got away by 5:15 and are no doubt safely settled in the Dorm by now. 'Twill be a busy bee hive this eve. Gl ate dinner & tea here. Cucumbers soaking for pickles. Did several rows of knitting – so it's getting on.

Sep. 22, Thur.

Made 3 qts whole pickles & 3 ½ of sliced ones – just sweet pickle. Ray said a family Mc Cready? from Ruanda will be here tomorrow. They brot children to Rethy – so swept guest house & made 4 beds. Metusela did huge washing. Folks went to overhanging rock for pictures but got stung badly by black wasps!!

Artons came for late lunch and just after they came there was heavy rain – then Mc Creadys came & got stuck – finally with the help of chains they got up. Miss Rutt came with Artons & is sleeping at Gls.

Plenty works” today. Made do nuts – all enjoyed them much. A land slide shut off the water & when it came it was too dirty to use for baths so we just had sponge baths – had boys carry from Lucilubi.

Nothing unusual. Raining when church was over so came home in it. Mr. Furman sang a Bangala hymn, then the chorus in Kingwana. All ate dinner at their own houses but supper at Fls. Then mtg here. I read the chap. Betty went to Abelis school.

Lots of wash & rain all A.M. Had progressive supper. Gls came here for choc. waffle dessert with ice cream which she brot. Killed a pig 56 kilo - @ Fr 13.

Sep. 27, Tues.

Took care of the meat. It's nice having some curing and some in ice box. & gave Betty some for her girls. The folks do enjoy Scrabble. Mc Creadys are leaving tomorrow morning.

Sep. 28, Wed.

Artons, Rutt & Edith left after dinner & Mc Creadys left after early breakfast. Mas went with Artons & will return with Cl. radio said he'd be at Oicha tonight. Hope Cl brings flour & butter for we are out of both.

Oicha said Cl. hadn't come – but he got here by supper time & Artons came right after. Cl. found a truck upset & across the road so he turned back & went to Lolwa & came Mambasa rd. Brot nice mail & butter & many nice things. Paul Buyses came for dinner. They are to come here & carry on when Cls leave.

This is Artons 9th wedding anniv. Will celebrate tomorrow night. Pd for the pig & I think I'll be able to pay the boys tomorrow. Furmans think they must go on Mon. Nice letters from Rays.

O wat a day! Mas. got breakfast & all work going then had to go to Mutwangas to get his needle. Muhindo's arm very sore. He didn't come. It began to rain ab't 8 & was at it hard til P.M. The river is on a rampage & we don't know what is left of the turbine & cement work. All had supper here – baked a cake for Artons 9th anniversary & her birthday tomorrow. Apolo helpt here.

Oct. 2, Sun.

Mas. finally came & helped with dinner. I didn't go to mtg. as things weren't ready at mtg time. The 2nd bridge is out so the folks can't get to Lolwa tomorrow - & guess we can't wash as water stopt. All to Gl's for supper. Have to use oil lamps as the dam is partly gone.

Oct. 3, Mon.

More rain last night. Mas. went again to get his needle & hasn't returned yet. We got wheat washed & dried in oven. Mary Rutt picked black berries so we had pie - & strasler whip for supper. Will make jelly tomorrow. Didn't wash because no good water. Raining again.

Oct. 4, Tues.

A big piece of road went with bridge so will take some time to fix. Dr. & Mrs B came to the washout & Cl met them there. They ate dinner at Cls - & Mrs was busy checking on medicine on hand & what needed. Rained much. Mas. here all day.

Oct. 5, Wed.

Heard Ray. Stanley announced ab't the bridge out – so we hope some of their folks got in. After break. we all piled into Artons car & went to see the washout. What a pile of rocks & boulders it is. Mr. Van Hamme is working at a temp. crossing but it rains every P.M. so can't get much done. Folks walked way up the valley.

Oct. 6, Thur.

Mr. F. was so sure he c'd get across that he packed the car & drove down – but tho he c'd cross the stream the approach on the other side is impossible. Blasting will be done tomorrow. Mu. went for meat & it was almost spoiled – he was so slow. Radio said Bill Beatty is very ill at Oicha.

Oct. 7, Fri.

Mr Van Hamme blasted some rocks this P.M. & now a car can get thro but the river is too hi tonight – expect it to be down in morning. They are all set to go. The car is part way down. Mail came but nothing much.

Oct. 8, Sat.

Furman party left after breakfast. Artons went too & helpt them cross. The water was pretty high but natives helpt. Gl. had tea for our school teachers, ending the wk of refresher work. Waffle supper & music.

Oct. 9, Sun.

Mr. Arton spoke at service then right after communion he came home & went to bed for his feet were very painful – has athletes foot. Staid in bed for they want to get off in the morning. Such a crowd of teachers and all so appreciate the work of the wk. All at Cls for supper.

Oct. 10, Mon.

They left right after breakfast. His feet are still painful & he will see Dr. They hoped to get to Lolwa tonight. Wonder if Andudu folks got home today. I ate at Cls. at noon. Muhindo went to Mutwanga on a case – he hurt a child accidentally. Got some letters off – Cl. cemented dam again so no lights. [referring to table cloth mentioned in Oct. 10, 1952 entry] I'd have it almost done but am at Dicks sweater.

Oct. 11, Tues.

Muhindo cleaned pantry shelves. Mas. has been excused for awhile. Cl shot what he c'd see of a snake in the foundation of living room – but we saw nor heard nothing more. Hope it leaves. Mail man got letters & I missed giving him 2 of Rays. My fault – just didn't notice how late it was. Took white rose out & cut back others.

Oct. 12, Wed.

Lovely day. Went to garden. Cl & Gl. left ab't 5:30 with a woman who is having trouble with her baby. Foibe couldn't manage it, So I got my letters posted. & they will shop & bring cash.

Oct. 13, Thur.

They got back ab't 5 – tho I waited to eat til 2:15. They waited for butter but it didn't come. Brot my parcel from Co. haven't oened it. Put things back into middle room. Pembed it yesterday. Muhindo got beef. Nice mail. Jowetts want to come in Dec.

Oct. 14, Fri.

Rained all AM. I unpacked my parcel. Such a lot of nice things but a package of pudding powder burst & got thro everything – all the dry goods will be washed tomorrow – 1 dish broken. Baby plates are very nice.

Oct. 15, Sat.

Canned 3 qts peas & made 6 glasses of strawberry jelly – baked 2 squash pies – buns & coffee cake. Metusela washed all the materials that had pudding powder on them. Muhindo cleaned living rooms.

Oct. 16, Sun.

I ate at Cls all day & Betty for dinner & supper. Can't have a quieter or lazier day. Wrote girls ab't parcel. No electric lights yet. Betty staid & talked after eve service. May decide to have dinner at hotel next Sat.

Oct. 17, Mon.

Folks from Uganda – mining engineer spent 2 or 3 hrs. here this A.M. & this PM. Mr. Kent – Park man – called. Canned 5 qts. green beans but 1 broke in pressure.

Oct. 18, Tues.

Have lights again tonight and it is nice. Wrote Mrs Hazlett. Mail left so am getting ready for next wk. Cl & Gl will go to Oicha next Mon. & then to pygmies. 20 children down with measles at Rethy.

Oct. 19, Wed.

Paul Buyse asked on the radio if our temporary bridge would hold a 3 T truck – so they are no doubt coming out next wk. Dr had to know something ab't lepers too so altho Daudi is gone to Oicha, we have to send another with the information. Measles are getting better.

Com. mtg at Oicha changed to Thur. so Cl can wait for Buyses to come before he leaves. Baked filled cookies. Sewing kapok pad & taking seeds out. Finished hall & bath room. Lights have gone out. Gl. altered 3 dresses Co sent – one is new.

Lights are on so bright tonight. Cleaned dining room mats & put pembe on floor. Must do a bit more tomorrow. I finished sewing the mattress. & made up the beds. Mail came – not much. A real happy day as we think of a year ago.

Oct. 22, Sat.

Parcels was on 10th. Busy in kitchen all A.M. boys finishing work here and plastering etc at guest house – getting ready for Buyses. I baked cake & iced it – had tea ab't 3 P.M. Then went to hotel ab't 6:30. Home by 9:30. A very nice time. They wouldn't take pay.

Oct. 23, Sun.

Services as usual. Had the big rooster of Cls. and it was good. The rhubarb pie too.

Heard Fuller Tonight over ELWA Liberia. Wrote letters – a quiet restful day.

Oct. 24, Mon.

Did I get a letter off to Mary? Can't remember but hope so. Muhindo helpt with pembe ing the guest house. Radio said Richard Crossman & Pauline Graichen are to be married in Dec. Wonder if Paul B's are loaded up ready to come.

Oct. 25, Tues.

Cleaned living room. and had every thing out & mats were being cleaned when Joe Cook came bringing a couple of Am. tourists – from Kentucky. Gl had gone out with the women. I did 3 qts pickles & 2 ½ qts beans. Got mail off. Lights went off at 7 – some thing wrong.

Oct. 26, Wed.

Buyses came in time for dinner and have their stuff all in the house. Our fellows made an awful mess of the pembeing & so no rooms are ready. So glad to have them here. tho they eat at Cls. No lights tonight – Cl working at rubbish trap.

Oct. 27, Thur.

Made Spry tin of jam – baked buns & cottage pudding with berry whip on it. Wrote some letters. Getting Christmas cards off. No lights tonight either. Got no meat.

Oct. 28, Fri.

Rainy so no boys came to work on the lawn. Went to get radio & as it was raining we sent for Betty to come there for pr mtg. Gl. found some goods to make up with gray material. Wrote quite a lot of letters. Christmas cards.

Oct. 29, Sat.

Pauls are getting settled in somewhat. Are sleeping there tonight. All had supper at Gls. then came here for music. Lights on tonight. Wrote more letters.

Oct. 30, Sun.

Very quiet day. Betty went to Mutwangas so didn't have dinner til late & wanted no supper. Heard C. E. Fuller's broadcast again but not very clear. As we finished a car came Cath sisters bringing a woman who has been in labor 2 days. Sent them to Oicha. B's ate breakfast at their house.

Oct. 31, Mon.

Expected Dr & Mrs Carpenter to spend the night here so we all ate at Cls for supper but no one came so we called it a Hallowee'n party. Spose the children are having lots of fun at the Dorm.

Nov. 1, Tues.

Boys moved stove away from wall & scraped all plaster off & put new on. Hope to pembe all tomorrow. Had long talk at Cls ab't what Bs should do ab't fixing up that place. Ab't decided to let them do it & we will see ab't a place for guest house if this big one or the nurses house.

Nov. 2, Wed.

Couldn't sleep last night so knitted. Talked more with Cl & Gl and feel happier. No matter what is decided I'll do the best I can. Pauls went to Beni brot flour & sugar – so white and fine. Picked lots of strawberries. Am glad to have jam to send to Rethi next wk with Klines. Had all meals with Gl. boys pembed kitchen.

Nov. 3, Thur.

Sent Muhindo for meat but there was none. Then thot we had a pig but that died some time ago. Have told all to look for a pig so here's hoping. Finished Dicks sweater – pressed etc. Am doing a bit of sewing for Israels family who go to Adi.

Nov. 4, Fri.

Made 4 dresses for Israel's family. Bot & killed a pig – Fr. 575. finished kitchen & stove is ready for baking tomorrow. Spent all eve starting “shrug” of blue nylon for Sara.

Nov. 5, Sat.

Cut up & divided the meat and rendered the lard – made some bacon. So thankful for all. Dinner & supper at Cls. squeezed some berries to make jell on Mon.

Nov. 6, Sun.

Very quiet day – ate at Gls all day. These Sundays are so restful. No responsibility. I feel guilty to have Gl do it all. but she has the native help. Got things ready for Rethy. Heard Fuller again.

Nov. 7, Mon.

Metusela came & washed. Cl took Israeli & family to Oicha ready to go with Stanley to Adi. Both Cl. & Paul are packed to leave in morning. Cls to Wambuba schools. Paul to Biasiko. Took every thing out of magazine & put gamatox on floor. Alive with jiggers.

Nov. 8, Tues.

We are alone – 3 women & Timmy. Paul left early & Cls after pr mtg. We waited dinner for Dr. til 1:45 then had just finished when he came also Jewell & Olive Rawn – so til they finished it was ab't 3. Dr. had stopt at Beni & performed an operation – so was delayed. He says he thinks it w'd be best to take nurses house down.

Nov. 9, Wed.

Jammed the berries over a Klim tin full. Muhindo came also Mas. for pay. Tried to straighten my dress around bottom – have turned the heel on Gl's sock. Met. making starch.

Nov. 10, Thur.

Have sock ab't ready for toe. I wont finish but will do the other one for I want to measure her ft. nylon stretches so. Muhindo went to Mutwanga with parcel for Lilian Van Hamme. She sent nice reply. No meat yet. 11 yrs. ago.

Nov. 11, Fri.

No school but other work went on. Have been remembering 11 yrs. ago. Glad I was too busy to feel sorry for myself. Nice mail came. Paul got in last eve. They had dinner here as they are getting settled. I baked – pickled – made 2 sorts of jelly. Lights tonight. Cora Huston has cancer of lung.

Nov. 12, Sat.

Cls came in by 12.

I baked buns & do-nuts but they are a flop. I made them specially soft & then let them rise too much. All had supper here. The lights are so bright & steady.

Nov. 13, Sun.

All here to dinner & Cls for breakfast. Nice communion service. All to Pauls for supper – sort of house warming. [written on paper napkin: “Paul and Katherine; Nov. 13, 1955; house warming supper – fish salad with devilled eggs, jello – buns – potato chips, sliced tomatoes, coffee, choc. marble cake.”] All came up here for our service – was tempted to knit at socks but will get them done.

Nov. 14, Mon.

Just finished knitting Gl's socks. & not yet bed time! Lots of strawberries were picked & am sending all to Oicha. Think all are pretty well packed. Muhindo brot beef. Folks want breakfast by 6:30.

Nov. 15, Tues.

Cls & Pauls left after early breakfast. After all had gone we discovered those 2 big bowls of strawberries were left – but a bit later Cls returned for their camera and the berries. So glad. Betty ate lunch here. Only Muhindo on the job. Got a few letters off.

Nov. 16, Wed.

Took all blank papers out of Dr's old files. Took me most all day. I burned a lot but still more to destroy tho I salvaged a lot of blank papers. No Buyses yet.

Nov. 17, Thur.

Ab't 8 a boy came with a note from Arlette asking for pink or white flowers for Miss Van Hamme's wedding. I sent all I c'd get into the basket. Buyses came in time for dinner. Quite a nice mail. Letter from Mr Pearson – also good one from Bissets. They are doing lots of Bible teaching these days.

Nov. 18, Fri.

Picked berries – Kath. took ab't ½ – hemmed tan dress – after straightening the bottom – stretched on bias seams – crocheted some. Wrote Mrs Janzen – she looks after Miss Boldt who is now 94. & gets queer in her head by spells.

Nov. 19, Sat.

Baked only buns, coffee cake & had cheese souffle for supper & strasberry whip. Made jelly. & canned 3 pts. black rasp. & Muhindo weighed wood all A.M. Bot over Fr. 300.

Nov. 20, Sun.

Betty went to Papi's. All had dinner at Buyses. but Betty didn't come tho we expected her then found her waiting for the dinner we were to send. She finally got it. All had supper here & mtg. Buyses hope to leave by 4 A.M. for Biasiko.

Nov. 21, Mon.

Boys said Buyses got away early. I got dinner for Cls but they didn't come til ab't 5. Brot some mails. The 2 white kittens were missing last night & all day. just now 8:15 a workman brings them both having found them near the church. He says the tom cat from the village led them away.

Nov. 22, Tues.

Lots of running over to Gl. Got a few letters off. I had dinner there. Ray said on radio – they couldn't come just at close of school for Crossmans will be in Kenya – for Richard C's wedding. I hope Mary A & Sally can come with others.

Nov. 23, Wed.

Picked 2 heaping dish pans of strawberries. Will make lots of jam. Have a chicken dressed for tomorrow – all eat at Cl's . Only 4!! Dusted walls & put up laundered curtains – looks nice & clean but its 3 wks. til folks come.

Nov. 24, Thur.

Made 23 lbs. of jam – and a lot of pickles. Had dinner at Cls. roast chicken & dressing etc etc. I couldn't eat any supper. Worked at knitting a “shrug” sweater – slow work. Wrote Hoyts.

Nov. 25, Fri.

Made several glasses strasberry jelly & canned 3 pts. black raspberry for pie. Benj. took a kitten – only one left & some one asked for it. but they are getting big enuf to forage for themselves. Knitted some.

Nov. 26, Sat.

Baked ginger bread and squash pie. Knitted most P.M. Takes 15 min. to knit across & purl back. slow work but its pretty.

Nov. 27, Sun.

Good service - & a nice day. All had dinner at Cls. & they had supper here. Wrote some letters. one to Mr Clarke for this is his birthday.

Nov. 28, Mon.

Cls ate dinner here as they whitewashed the living room. I made deep dish pie of black berries – very good. Got quite a few letters off. Cl is having trouble with the turbine – too much rubbish in the river.

Nov. 29, Tues.

Mr. Paul & team came ab't 5:30. I had supper there. He says Buyses are at Oicha tonight & will be here tomorrow. Heated all wheat – pretty buggy. Picked strawberries.

Nov. 30, Wed.

Mtgs all day. I got dinner so all boys could go to the mtgs. All ate supper here. Pauls got in just as we were ready to eat. No evening service. I went to P.M. mtg. Talks were fine – music too.

Dec. 1, Thur.

All ate at Cls. I got dinner but attended the first mtg. All were so good. attended all PM for we ate at Buyses. Very nice time & good supper. The party leave for Oicha tomorrow.

Dec. 2, Fri.

Mr. Paul & his team left after pr. mtg. ab't 8:30. He left Rays letters but Cl. expects to go over tomorrow so he can take it. Heavy clouds – later rain so very little work was done. Covered a couch cushion. Gl. chose material for Mama Ya Hadija a dress – for Christmas.

Dec. 3, Sat.

Cl. & Betty went to Beni & Oicha to do shopping & bring home wife & family of Yona who is finishing at Adi & will return later. Israeli went & will begin his course in Jan. All had supper here.

Dec. 4, Sun.

The church was full & some outside & children at their meeting. Kathrine helped in their mtg & Paul preached in ours. Quite a lot – 77 accepted Christ during Paul's mtgs. 35 reclaimed – and 12 gave themselves for any service for God.

Dec. 5, Mon.

Gl whitewashed dining room and kitchen of her house so they ate both dinner & supper here & will come for breakfast too. We expect Dr. tomorrow.

Dec. 6, Tues.

Dr. came by 12 but dinner was not ready so he went to work for a bit. He was thro early. Katherine had coco cola – with ice – very good. I made pie crusts & buns. and we all ate at Cls. only not Betty as she has school.

Dec. 7, Wed.

Some mail but not much. Metusela ironed – I baked custard pie for dinner. Knitted at shrug & also made 1 motif. Wrote Mrs Skoglund. Muhindo has gone for a few days.

Dec. 8, Thur.

Made pickles. Gl. made cranberry sauce from roselle buds. Very good. Metusela got meat. We are so grateful. Knitted most P.M. it goes very slowly. Wrote Lois thanks for $100. Sent for Memorial home.

Dec. 9, Fri.

Roasted peanuts all A.M. Too rainy for children to work. Cleared later. Pauls went to Beni brot 2 letters – one from Alice! I made banana cream pie.

Dec. 10, Sat.

Baked buns, bread & cake – all got good. had supper at Cls. Made 2 motifs besides doing 6 rows on the shrug sweater. Wind thunder & lightening but no rain & it would be welcome for things transplanted.

Dec. 11, Sun.

All ate dinner at Buyses and supper here – but just at supper time Daudi Muhindo asked Cl to take his very ill baby boy to Dr. so they ate a bit & then left hoping to catch Dr. before he leaves for Lolwa.

Dec. 12, Mon.

Cls came just at noon. I had dinner all ready. Baked a berry pie. No one came to work it was so rainy all day. Carl Beckers baby girl was born last eve – Peggy Marie. Rays will come on Thur & bring children all.

Dec. 13, Tues.

Seemed like old times with Mas. back in the kitchen. He made 287 cookies for Christmas tea party. Gl. made 350. Must make many more tomorrow. Metusela killed snake on falls road – 74” long. Will have birthday party on Fri. night. Gl & I wrapped presents ready for the tree.

Dec. 14, Wed.

Today he baked 700 cookies but it still wont be enuf. Ray said this morning several children are sick – so we don't feel as happy as we might. he gave no names. Their program should be over. I do hope no one will be delayed in getting away.

Dec. 15, Thur.

Boohoo 8:15 & no car yet. We thot they were coming then the light turned into Jacquemins place. No one was on radio at Rethy so we don't know what to expect but will take what comes. Do hope none are sick.

Dec. 16, Fri.

They did come in ½ hr later. M.A. & Billy are sick. both lying down much of the day. The cakes were very good. Cl's coconut – pink & white & MA's checker. Gl. put pretties on. had scalloped potatoes – with mushroom soup & bacon on top. large good salad – strawberry ice cream. & tape tonight made by John & Betty – so good.

Dec. 17, Sat.

Mas. baked 2 pies & husbands cake. Rather quiet day. Billy & MA both in bed most all day. Had Bill's tape this eve – 'Twas very natural & very funny. B's went to Kasindi to out school for wk end.

Dec. 18, Sun.

All had dinner here. Rainy all A.M. All at Cls for supper. Buyses got back ab't 4. All here for good tape by Mr Pultz – in Texas. They help support Ray.

Dec. 19, Mon.

Mas on the job but left much to Mu – so I spoke to him abt it. He is to see to food - & Mu to get wood & water etc. not cook. I'm having headache a lot – but not bad cold like last yr. MA & Billy are both better.

Dec. 20, Tues.

Mas. made ginger cookies. MA will ice them tomorrow. Cl. was very sick last night & today – severe abdominal pains. If not better by morning Ray will take him to Oicha. One of Betty's girls was married today. Rains some every day but clothes got dry & are ironed. So nice to have myt family here.

Dec. 21, Wed.

Cafateria supper here & “The Messiah” tape afterward. Was grand. I croched almost 1 motif. Gl. knitted, Katherine & Sara & MA sewed. Just the sort of evening I love. Some presents are under the tree.

Dec. 22, Thur.

Mail finally came ab't 2 P.M. - such a lot & the customs slip for the parcel from Cora so we will have that next week. Made fudge & also made out the fondant. The stove has been smoking awful. Mas cleaned it & now its fine.

Dec. 23, Fri.

Can't see I did very much but I did make another lot of fondant & it got really good & all made out into candy. Waffle supper & Betty here – had more slides – very good. Mostly of their family life. Getting a box of candy ready for Arlette at hotel.

Dec. 24, Sat.

Opened our parcels after supper at Buyses. How good God is – such lots of things but most of all the love of friends & dear ones that prompted them all. This crowd will be somewhat scattered next Christmas.

Dec. 25, Sun.

This yr the pig weighed only 55 kilos & cost 825. [previous yr. pig was 60 kilos for 780 Frcs.] Boys helpt well over dinner which was roast chicken – 3 of 'em. Plenty left for meat pie tomorrow. At 9 A.M. was a drama on birth of Christ – did very well for native's interpretation. Then Yona Mwaka pastor just back from Adi spoke. Then 40 baptisms – dinner & communion. Supper at Cls. Sing – Cl read & tape music.

Dec. 26, Mon.

A holiday with plenty of work all A.M. Cls & Betty had dinner with us. Then native tea for perhaps 400. All went well & all got some & some to take home. Mas. has a bad ft so didn't come this eve. A Nairobi lady came - will bring her friend to tea.

Dec. 27, Tues.

The 2 ladies from Nairobi came to tea. We all went to Cls. Didn't wash for there was no water this morning & Met. had his head tied up – got it bumped at ball game yesterday. Mas. didn't come. Paul left this P.M. for Oicha & Biasiko.

Dec. 28, Wed.

Picked berries enuf for both house holds & so nice I used none for jam. Mas. back at work. Washed but too rainy to dry. Cl. poured the cement for the floor of toilet. Still a question among us – shall this house repaired be the guest house or the nurses house made over. God guide.

Dec. 29, Thur.

And now we are going again only this time to Bogoro plains. I may go & stay at Harters – but not if Lolwa ladies come here before. Muh. went for meat. All ate weiner roast here – too rainy outside.

Dec. 30, Fri.

Had movies tonight some old & some new ones – some of the animal ones are fading – sorry. Sara has made a dress from material Co sent – it's very nice. Sometimes I think I'll go – then again perhaps I'll stay. Mail sh'd decide.

Baked for camp as well as tomorrow. Ray & Cl showing movies to natives in back yard. Big mail with lots of letters. Miss Petrie says they hope to come with Dr on Tues. & a note from Pinkertons says they want to come Tues. & stay 2 days on their way to the Lake Kivu.

(Memorandum A) By the noise in back yard the folks are enjoying the “Cinema” as some call it. And now all plans & reservations are made for furlo. Cls sail from Mombasa Apr. 27 - & get to N.Y. June 27. And we leave Leo (Memorandum B) Sunday night Aug. 12 at 7 oclock & get to N.Y. the next eve at 9. Again I can say like last year I'm so glad for my family & next yr. we will be on the same cont. tho perhaps not together. HE REMAINS FAITHFUL.
